Orthodontic treatment has the longest treatment cycle of any dental procedure (typically 12–30 months), which on the surface makes “cross-border orthodontics” look impractical. In practice, a growing number of international patients are choosing a “treatment planned and aligners manufactured in China + remote monitoring during periods at home + return visits at key milestones” model — particularly for clear aligner therapy. The Chinese market offers Invisalign (Align Technology, US) plus domestic players Angelalign, Smartee, and Easy-Align. Prices are typically one-half to two-thirds of US levels. This article works through plan selection, brand choice, typical workflow, real costs, and the realistic feasibility of cross-border orthodontics.

1. Three Main Types of Orthodontic Treatment

Type Strengths Weaknesses Typical duration
Clear aligners Aesthetic, removable, easy to clean Limited for complex cases; requires high patient compliance 12–24 months
Conventional metal / ceramic brackets Suitable for all complexities; precise force control Less aesthetic, harder to clean 18–30 months
Lingual brackets (placed on the inner surface of teeth) Completely invisible Higher cost, tongue discomfort in the first 1–2 months, only at specialised centres 18–30 months
Self-ligating brackets (Damon, etc.) Fewer adjustments Slightly higher cost 18–24 months

2. Clear Aligner Brands (Main Players in the Chinese Market)

  1. Invisalign (Align Technology, US) — global market leader, the most extensive case data, broadest indications
  2. Angelalign (China) — China’s largest domestic clear aligner brand, with US FDA 510(k) clearance [1]
  3. Smartee (China)
  4. Easy-Align (China)

Practical guidance on imported vs domestic:

  1. Complex cases (extraction-based orthodontics, severe deep bite, skeletal issues) — favour Invisalign for its largest global case base
  2. Simple to moderate cases (mild-to-moderate crowding, mild spacing) — Angelalign and Smartee offer strong value with acceptable outcomes

3. The Real Feasibility of Cross-Border Orthodontics

Traditional view: orthodontics requires in-person review every 4–8 weeks, so cross-border treatment seems impractical. Reality: clear aligner protocols changing trays every 1–2 weeks plus remote video monitoring (apps such as Dental Monitoring) make “low-frequency in-person review” viable.

A typical cross-border orthodontic rhythm (clear aligner example):

  1. First trip to China (5–7 days): examination, CBCT, intraoral scan, treatment plan, first phase of aligners delivered
  2. 6–8 months at home: self-administered tray changes plus remote monitoring (depending on brand)
  3. Second trip to China (3–5 days): progress assessment plus next phase of aligners delivered
  4. 6–12 months at home: treatment continues
  5. Third trip to China (3–5 days): refinement plus retainer delivery
  6. Retainer wear for 1–2 years

Total duration 12–24 months, 2–3 trips to China at 3–7 days each.

4. Hospitals to Consider (Same as Article #60)

Both public stomatology specialty hospitals and high-end private chains perform orthodontics. The core of orthodontics is the orthodontist, not the hospital — choosing a specialist orthodontist (rather than a general dentist) is critical.

Leading domestic orthodontic teams are most often based at:

  1. Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, Orthodontics
  2. West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Orthodontics
  3. Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital Orthodontics
  4. Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University, Orthodontics
  5. School of Stomatology, Fourth Military Medical University, Orthodontics
  6. High-end private: Byoral, Arrail, MyDental flagship facilities typically have specialist orthodontists on staff

5. Real Costs (USD, 1 USD = 6.5 RMB)

Plan Public tertiary High-end private
Invisalign standard 4,000–6,500 5,500–9,000
Invisalign complex 6,000–8,500 8,000–12,000
Angelalign standard 2,500–4,500 3,500–6,000
Angelalign complex 4,000–6,500 5,500–9,000
Conventional metal brackets 2,000–3,500 3,500–5,500
Ceramic brackets 2,500–4,500 4,500–7,000
Self-ligating (Damon) 3,500–5,500 5,500–8,500
Lingual orthodontics 8,000–12,000 12,000–18,000

US reference:

  1. Invisalign typically USD 5,000–8,000 [2]
  2. Conventional brackets USD 4,000–7,000

6. Notes Specific to International Patients

  1. Complex cases are not recommended for cross-border treatment — cases requiring high-frequency review (particularly extraction-based or skeletal corrections) should be completed in your home country
  2. Children and adolescent orthodontics — growth-phase monitoring needs to be close and is difficult to deliver cross-border
  3. Planned in China + manufactured in China + transferred to home country for continued treatment is feasible, but requires advance coordination with a home-country orthodontist who is willing to take over
  4. Remote monitoring apps: Invisalign and Angelalign each have their own apps to track tooth movement
  5. Retainers: lifetime wear (nightly), non-negotiable — without retainers, relapse rates of 30–50% are routine

7. What MedCareInChina Can and Cannot Do on the Orthodontic Pathway

Our two products are Remote Consultation and In-China Accompanied Care.

  1. Remote Consultation: a USD 800 single-expert consultation with an orthodontist who reviews your intraoral photos and CBCT and gives an honest assessment of plan options and whether cross-border treatment is appropriate for your case
  2. In-China Accompanied Care: hospital accompaniment with translation at each in-China milestone

What we do not do: remote tooth-movement monitoring, home-country maintenance, insurance claim handling.

8. Action Checklist

  1. Bring intraoral photos plus panoramic radiograph plus CBCT from the last 3 months
  2. Document your main concerns (crowding? protrusion? deep bite?)
  3. Engage a remote consultation for treatment plan and pricing range
  4. Honest self-assessment: complex cases are not appropriate for cross-border treatment
  5. Apply for a multi-entry S2 visa
  6. Plan a first trip of 5–7 days
  7. Confirm with a home-country orthodontist that they are willing to handle the transfer and ongoing maintenance
  8. Lifetime retainer wear
